Amidst all the political hysteria, gamesmanship, claims of chaos, in-fighting, and media counter-punching, Mr. Trump would be wise take to heart James Carville's 1992 winning campaign slogan for Bill Clinton's presidential run to defeat President George H. W. Bush - "it's the economy, stupid." Rather than insult, the phrase is intended to be an admonition not to underestimate the importance of the economy in every policy and political decision a president makes.

Globalization and productivity have all but neutralized inflation.  Profits in the US continue to surge while analysts play catch-up.  Global economic growth looks healthy as well among the G6 countries.  Earnings in Japan and Europe outpace analysts’ expectations just as they do here.  And the developing ‘BRIC’ countries; Brazil, Russia, India, and China are ablaze with growth rates as high as 10%.  

The airplanes of September 11th, the tech-bust of 2000, the corporate scandals of 2001, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the relentless credit tightening of the Federal Reserve, spiraling oil prices, and increasing global Islamic unrest, separately or combined have failed to stop this economy of ‘steel.’  Will virus infected birds finally accomplish what the prior challengers have been unable to wreak?  The predictions range from not at all, to a total global depression.
