05 Oct 2018 Navigating the Challenges that come with Aging

It’s safe to assume that, short of an untimely end, we will all continue to age. And yet, as financial planners, our experience has shown us that most address the topic of aging in one of two ways: either by having a vague conversation about downsizing at some point and leaving it at that, or by waiting until a crisis occurs and then being forced into action.

With aging an inevitability for all of us, doesn’t it make sense to spend more time planning for what we hope our lives will look like in our 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and communicating that vision with our loved ones? We think so.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to Nancy Ruffner. Nancy is a professional healthcare advocate and president of Navigate NC here in Raleigh. She and her team are experts at helping people navigate the challenges that come with aging. Whether it’s ideas on how to begin seemingly difficult conversations with your adult children (or with your parents!), understanding what resources are available to help you care for an aging parent or getting a grasp on the process and cost of moving into a transitional care community, they can help.

Because this topic is so important to us all, whether we’re closer to 40 or 70, we’ve decided to host an event with Nancy called “Taking a Team Approach to Aging.” Some of the questions we plan to discuss are…

• How do I begin the conversation about aging with loved ones?
• When is the right time to move to a transitional living facility? How much does it cost?
• How do I find a good fit in such a facility?  Are there other options?
• Can I age in my home? What resources are available to help me do so?
• What resources are available to help me care for my aging parents?
• What if I’m not married and don’t have children? What are my options?

We hope you can join us for this event which will be held on October 25th at the Rialto Theater at 1620 Glenwood Avenue. The presentation will begin at 7 PM with drinks and light hors d’oeuvres starting at 6:30 PM.
